About Paula Fernandez Mederos
Paula Fernandez Mederos is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is mainly focused on performing arts and costume design. Born in 1994 in Cuba, she starts following her passion for art at a young age, what leads her to begin her studies at San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in 2009, and continue it at University of the Arts (ISA) in 2013. She holds an Honors Diploma in Academic Painting, and a BA summa cum laude in Theatre Design and Stagecraft, what have prompted her to experiment with the scene’s tradition utilizing her background as a visual artist to generate authentic realities.
She begins working as a professional before graduating, when in 2015 participates with two wearable art pieces in the XII Havana Biennial, and in 2016 starts designing and producing costumes for a contemporary dance company. Her work has been presented at Colors Dance Festival (Stuttgart 2017), Fall for Dance North (Toronto 2018), and Cuba Festival at the Joyce Theater (New York 2019). Sha has also collaborated with artists such as actress Ana de Armas, and the singer and songwriter Descemer Bueno.
In 2019 she moves to the US, where she starts learning the art of tattooing and continues working as Art Director in the video art series directed by the artist and Professor Emeritus at the University of San Diego, Steve Fagin. 45 Minutes of Edith Wharton (2022), News from Nowhere (2023) and La Cura (2025), are her most recent collaborations while she keeps working full time as a tattoo artist.
